Moanalua / Salt Lake DistrictMoanalua is a well-established single-family home community situated in either the valley or along the hillside. Foster Village has two modern recreational centers, each sporting its own swimming pool and playground equipment for the kids. Close-by are Aloha Stadium; a huge retail discount shopping center and Tripler Army Hospital. Salt Lake is only a ghost of its former self; it was filled for land development and a golf course. The community is mostly medium to high-rise condominiums with some single-family homes surrounding the beautiful golf course. All of these communities are a short distance from the airport, Hickam Air Force Base, the downtown business district, and the Pearl Harbor Navy Base. Downtown / Nuuanu DistrictThere are condominiums near Chinatown, on the edge of town, and one in the heart of Nuuanu's business district. Most of these condos offer beautiful mountain or ocean vistas. The slopes and hillsides of Nuuanu have older single-family homes within established communities, some with city views and most on lots of 5,000 to 8,000 sq. ft. On the hills of Nuuanu and Pacific Heights are several large estates offering panoramic city and ocean views. A handful of quality condominiums as well as eateries, private and public schools, churches and hospital thrive in the area. Ala Moana / Kakaako DistrictAla Moana is located at the edge of the Waikiki district and attracts a large number of tourists. Luxury and high-end apartments can be found here, many with spectacular ocean, park, and city views. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the convenience to Ala Moana Center, Oahu’s largest regional shopping center; Ala Moana Beach Park, a boat harbor, restaurants and movie theatres. Surrounding communities are Kapiolani, Ward, and Kinau. There are a few areas of older single-family homes here, but residences are primarily low rise and high-rise condominiums. Kakaako, close to Downtown Honolulu, is mostly industrial. Makiki / Manoa DistrictMakiki is ideal for those wanting a short commute to downtown Honolulu, Waikiki, and the University of Hawaii. Makiki is mostly condos with a only some single family homes mixed in. Choices of condominium styles (walk-up, low rise, high rise) are plentiful, with a variety of price ranges. The hillside neighborhoods of Makiki Heights and Tantalus have single-family homes in the higher price range. There are many public and private schools, two hospitals and some churches in the area. Part of Manoa’s continuing appeal to residents is its tree-lined streets, complete with traditional and New England style architecture. The Manoa community extends deep into the green valley from which emerges another very desirable neighborhood, Woodlawn. As its name implies, this section is quite woodsy and its homes are often set among green lawns and towering trees. This neighborhood area is home to many fine restaurants, grocers and shopping centers. The University of Hawaii is in the lower section of Manoa. Waikiki DistrictWaikiki is a world famous beach resort. It’s 2 miles long and is the center of the state’s billion-dollar tourist industry. There is a great number of movie theaters, lively nightlife, restaurants of all kinds and hotels for every budget. The Waikiki District is a densely populated condo area with many residential type buildings, with some offering hotel operations or short-term rentals, some fully furnished. There is a quieter side to Waikiki, near Kapiolani Park and the slopes of Diamond Head crater, a tree-lined district often referred to as the "Gold Coast". Oceanfront or ocean view apartments are in great demand and available at premium prices. A number of the apartment blocks are cooperatives rather than condominiums.
