Animal Quarantine

If you're moving to Hawaii and you own a pet, it's important to understand Hawaii's animal quarantine requirements and plan ahead.  Hawaii is rabies-free and the government has quarantine laws for animals so that it will stay that way.  If you properly prepare your animal with the necessary vaccines and have a microchip in place you can generally reduce or even eliminate any quarantine time period. But keep in mind that the puppies often cannot receive a rabies vaccine until they are 3 to 6 months or older.  So, to meet all the requirements of reducing or eliminating a quarantine period for your dog or cat, they will likely be 10 months old before it can all be completed.  I was surprised to learn that most, if not all, of the imported puppies and kittens that are sold in pet stores are shipped from Australia or New Zealand because those countries are rabies-free as Hawaii is.  Click this link to view the checklist of what is required to reduce the quarantine times to five days or less.  If your pet does not meet the checklist requirements, please view the Hawaii Rabies Quarantine Brochure.

There are prohibited animals that cannot be brought to Hawaii.  For example, you cannot bring snakes, alligators, monk parakeets, lories, hamsters, geckos, bees (alive or dead), ferrets, gerbils, hermit crabs, piranhas, snapping turtles or toucans.  Please check the Department of Agriculture website for a detailed and more complete list of prohibited animals.

If you have any questions regarding animal quarantine, after reading the Hawaii Rabies Quarantine Brochure, you can call the Animal Quarantine Station at 808-483-7151, or email them at rabiesfree@hawaii.gov.  The Animal Quarantine Station is located at 99-951 Halawa Valley Street, Aiea, Hawaii 96701.  If your pet will be released to you directly at the airport, there is a separate location where you can pickup your pet.  Please call the Airport Animal Quarantine Holding Facility at 808-837-8092 for instructions on Direct Release.
